The Mid-Autumn Festival
Dear Jackson,
I'm so glad to hear that you are really interested in the Mid-Autumn Festival, and I would be happy to provide you with some information.
As you know, China is an ancient country with many amusing tales, one of which is widely thought to be the origin of the Mid- Autumn Festival. Long, long ago, there was a fierce dragon that was going to eat the moon. In order to protect the moon, children made a lot of noise to drive away the dragon, so the moon remained as full as before. From then on, people began to celebrate the festival.
According to the lunar calendar, the Mid- Autumn Festival is often celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. That day, people often decorate their houses by hanging up red lanterns.
During the festival, people who are far away from home go back home to get together with their family. After lighting the lanterns, children will usually have fun playing with the toy lanterns.
When evening comes, the whole family gathers together to reminisce on the good old days and look forward to the future. On this special occasion, we also admire the moon and eat moon cakes. That day the moon seems fuller, brighter and more attractive than ever.
This is our traditional festival. How do you like it? I hope one day you can enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival with us here in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
